RE: New Driver's Licence in Ontario June 16th 08

Thanks George. That puts me into the G licence. Hopefully this info is clearly stated in the rumored changes coming in the fall. This calling or talking to various ministry people and getting different answers has created much frustration :R.

A with

a motor vehicle pulling double trailers
a motor vehicle pulling a trailer with air-brakes.
For a full description, visit: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/classalic.htm

Interesting. RV's are mentioned but most of the faqs refer to commercial drivers.

RE: Top ten reasons you still go RVing despite the price of fuel

RV rule of thumb #27. Replace tires every 5 years, whether the trailer is being used or not... Might as well get some use outa the tires :B

RE: Jayco landing gear problem

I'd call Jayco ASAP. They may be able to provide some help on this. The 'Authorized Jayco' dealer should have done this on your behalf but probably didn't want to appear inept to Jayco. If there's an intermittent short, you could end up with other problems.

RE: Weber Q 200

We use the Weber Q220. It has a slightly higher lid than the 200 and a temp gauge. Otherwise identical. We liked it so much, I've been bringing it home between camping trips to use for back yard barbeques. The cooking results rival the full sized barbeques with a mere 12,000 BTU output. There are no flair-ups thanks to the design. It's one of the best portable barbeques on the market but it does have some weight to it because of the heavy porcelain-enameled cast iron grate. We bought the folding stand as well. The only problem we've had at times is that some of the holes in the burner can get clogged due to their small size and need to be cleared with a pin tip. I think spraying the grate with products like Pam to prevent sticking may have caused the problem with some of the spray clogging the holes. I've changed to wiping the grates with an oiled pad if needed.

RE: Best way to carry lots of water?

I know one fellow camper that uses the 50 gallon water pillow. He uses one of these to transfer the water to the trailer fresh tank.

RE: 5th wheel towing real world experience needed

We are changing to 16.5K lb 5th wheel with 2750lb hitch weight. towing with 06 GMC crewcab short bed 2500HD.
kbsplus2, did the dealer tell you your truck would handle that fifth wheel, no problem? The hitch weight you indicate may be dry weight. The weight of cargo raise the pin weight a few hundred pounds or more. Much of the cargo in a fiver is forward in the lower storage and in the front bedroom. You'll never actually know the pin weight until you hit the scales.

RE: Garmin GPS - cold temps

We always take the GPS into the house. I believe the electronics and LCD panel will survive temperature extremes in our area. The GPS manual should provide recommended temperature limits. The Lithium-ion battery used in the GPS is of more concern to me, heat being more of a problem. The following info provides some explanation:
Guidelines for prolonging Li-ion battery life
Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a long time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40% - 60%. Lithium-ion batteries should not be frequently fully discharged and recharged ("deep-cycled") like Ni-Cd batteries, but this is necessary after about every 30th recharge to recalibrate any external electronic "fuel gauge" (e.g. State Of Charge meter). This prevents the fuel gauge from showing an incorrect battery charge.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be depleted to below their minimum voltage, 2.4v to 3.0v per cell.
Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly.
According to one book, lithium-ion batteries should not be frozen (most lithium-ion battery electrolytes freeze at approximately -40 °C; this is much colder than the lowest temperature reached by household freezers, however).
Li-ion batteries should be bought only when needed, because the aging process begins as soon as the battery is manufactured.

RE: Camping at Killbear Provincial Park Ontario

We camped at Killbear in Lighthouse point a few years ago with a 33' fifth. There are many sites large enough but may take some maneuvering to enter and exit the site. The roadways within each camping section can also be tight on turns. Take it slow and use a spotter when needed. We took a canoe with us and spent many enjoyable hours on the water.
This website allows you to book a campsite or at least check out size and description of each site:

RE: Shock absorbers on a 5th wheel

what were the results?
Imagine driving a car with and without shocks. Now apply that perception to your fiver (and it's cargo - dishes, etc...)

RE: Short bed vs. long bed

Our short bed quad cab 3500 is a daily driver for my wife. She lets me drive when it's time to tow. Our main reason for buying the truck was to tow a fifth wheel, not carry 4x8 sheets of drywall or plywood. If we need to do that, the sheets can lay up and over the tailgate. We installed a Pullrite Superglide hitch, and when it comes to towing, you maneuver as if you had a long bed. The Superglide moves back automatically. We have a cargo box behind the cab as well.

RE: Goodyear Marathons-65lbs. cold????

Bring them up to the required pressure. On your way to Florida, before starting out each morning, check the tires and drop the pressure as necessary. That's what I do.. it doesn't hurt to have some extra incentive to check your tires before hitting the road each day, and this system is foolproof!
Bang on.
No pun intended :)
Very good advice.
